Kolding – a journey
through time
Kolding is Denmark’s only UNESCO City of Design. Here,
design shapes the city’s development and innovation,
while also inviting you on a historical journey through
art, culture and architecture. You decide for yourself
where to begin – perhaps where it all started.

Koldinghus has served many
roles over time – from medieval
fortress and elegant Renaissance
castle to royal residence. After
the great 昀椀re of 1808, the castle
was restored and converted
into a museum, where you can
explore its rich history.

Can a perfect society be built?
The craftsmen of the Moravan
Brethren believed that it was
possible when they created
Christiansfeld with a focus on
symmetry, community and
equality. Today, the town is part
of the UNESCO World Heritage.
A walk through the straight streets,
a taste of the traditional honey
cakes and a visit to the museum in
Søstrehuset quickly reveal why.
No one knows the 昀椀rst owner of
Kolding’s oldest preserved house, Det
Gamle Borgerhus. The second owner,
however, is well-known: the shoemaker
Søren Hansen, who took over the house
in 1704. His family lived here until 1915.
Today, the building serves as a gallery for
temporary exhibitions of visual art.
